Sacramental Preparation - Adult Formation

Meeting 3rd June 2008

RCIA Programme

Aug until Advent can be used as a period for a ‘Come And See’ programme where people are introduced to aspects of the Catholic faith and prayer and to be given an opportunity to ask questions of their own.

During Advent people will be asked to reflect on whether or not they wish to seek instructions to be received into the Catholic Church.

From January there will be instruction for people who are considering the possibility of being received into the church. This period of preparation should take as long as necessary.

During the period between Easter and Pentecost parishioners will be invited to take part in sessions that help them to understand their Catholic faith as well as continuing with the instructions for those who are considering being received into the Church.

Primary School Reach Out To Parents

St Mary’s primary school will host a four week programme during Oct-Nov and possibly during the period between Easter and Pentecost that will invite parents to share and learn about the Catholic faith.

Parents wishing to baptize children over the age of 2 years.

A substantial period of formation for the parents needs to take place. This will include periods of instruction as well as guidance to help the parents to become familiar again with the cycle of prayer and commitment in the parish.

Once this period of formation of the parents has been completed, preparation for the baptism of the child(children) can begin.

Strengths and Weaknesses Of The Last Programme

Strengths

Young People responded positively to the programme

Very much like being at school
No spiritual input from other resources like the In Reality Group

When Should The Next Programme Start?

The programme should run every 2 years

In September groups should meet and enjoy each others company . Spiritual and social awareness to begin in Advent.

Programme continues through Easter with Confirmation taking place by Pentecost.

The meeting could take place during the mid wek and held monthly.

Sacramental Preparation - First Holy Communion

3rd June 2008

Comments on current course.

Allowing for the constraints that everyone had to work under the programme for 2008 went well.

Changes to make for next programme

The course books should be used by the parents at home. The meetings on a Sunday afternoon can then focus on conversations with the children, listening to their questions and explaining the important aspects of reconciliation and communion.

The children should be invited to declare their commitment before the Sat/Sun congregations. The use of their baptismal candles in the liturgy would make links with their baptism and their parents commitment to raise their children in the faith.

The children’s work should be displayed in the church.

Sunday afternoon 4-00pm is a good time to meet but the session should be shortened from 2 hours to 1hr 30 min.

The time table could be

September

Declare interest and arrange for an introductory meeting for parents.

Oct-Nov

Register and prepare for sacrament of reconciliation. (3-4 sessions)

Jan-April

Regular attendance at weekend mass.

May-June

Prepare for and celebrate First Holy Communion.

September

Thanksgiving mass.
